Gii program on water launched at New Orleans Town Hall

The Gii program on water was officially launched at the recent ACS Spring event in New Orleans.

At a special ‘Town Hall’ event on Sunday 5 April 2008, ACS president elect, Tom Lane opened the meeting and explained the need for a disciplinary approach to the issues. ‘We need industrialists, academics and government scientists from all disciplines to work together with scientists to work with business leaders in government, industry and education.’ He urged interested parties to join the Gii community.

Water availability, supply and quality are issues affecting the whole world, said keynote speaker Ed Means, vice president of Malcolm Pirnie, an environmental consulting firm based in New York. A burgeoning world population, climate change, tighter regulations, manpower shortages and public communications are just a few of the challenges which need to be addressed.

SCI chief executive, Andrew Ladds explained that Gii is a joint venture between ACS and SCI that aims to form a community of stakeholders and stimulate knowledge transfer to encourage innovation that meets a range of global societal issues starting with water.
